The sermon series “Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time” is based on Marcus Borg’s pivotal book of the same name. The series explores our feelings about wanting a contemporary faith while simultaneously inviting a rigorous examination of historical findings about Jesus can lead to a new faith in Christ. Borg illustrates how an understanding of the historical Jesus can actually lead to a more authentic Christian life—one not rooted in creed or dogma, but in a life of spiritual challenge, compassion, and community.
Sermon Theme: “Tough Talk”
Scripture: John 6:56-71
Overview: When we experience the difficult reality of Jesus’ teachings, many of us choose not to follow. As disciples-in-training, we have to face the difficult decision of Jesus’ tough talk: Do we confront the spiritual reality of the world, or would we rather choose not to follow?
Human Need: We may not always want to do the work, but we do have a need to have someone to believe in.
Community Challenge: Spiritual reality is found in following Jesus, in spite of the fact that he is sometimes difficult to understand and accept. With Peter, we can respond to Jesus: “Where else do we go, Lord?”
