This sermon series “Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time” is based on Marcus Borg’s pivotal book of the same name. The series explores our feelings about wanting a contemporary faith while simultaneously inviting a rigorous examination of historical findings about Jesus can lead to a new faith in Christ. Borg illustrates how an understanding of the historical Jesus can actually lead to a more authentic Christian life—one not rooted in creed or dogma, but in a life of spiritual challenge, compassion, and community.
Sermon Theme: “What Lies Ahead?”
Scripture: John 6:35, 41-51
Overview: The crowds who searched for Jesus sought answers to their deeper, implicit questions about who he was and what lies ahead in their ultimate future. Jesus both affirmed their questions and gave them the answer: that he is the bread of life.
Human Need: As mortals, humankind has a universal desire for life after death.
Community Challenge: Jesus affirms the questioning process by engaging us, as seekers, in conversation, and exploring the questions underneath our grumblings.
