Scripture Inspiration: “Jesus replied, “Go, your faith has saved you.” And immediately Bartimaeus received the gift of sight and began to follow Jesus along the road.” – Mark 10:52
Reflection: In the story of Bartimaeus, we see a man, blind and marginalized, who yearns to come close to Jesus. When he cries out for Jesus’ help, many around him try to quiet him, to hold him back. But Jesus doesn’t let these barriers stop Bartimaeus from coming close. Instead, He calls for Bartimaeus and heals him with just a few simple words. What a powerful reminder that God’s love and healing don’t require us to be perfect or to have our lives in perfect order. God’s grace reaches us where we are, whether others see us as “worthy” or not.
There’s a deep lesson here about both God’s heart and ours. Many of us have likely felt pushed away or deemed “unworthy” by others in moments of need. Perhaps even in faith communities, we’ve felt judged or unable to truly come to God just as we are. But this story shows that Jesus isn’t worried about others’ perceptions; He simply wants us to come to Him honestly and openly.
Likewise, it challenges us as a community of believers. Are there ways we, too, may inadvertently place barriers between others and God? Whether through judgment, assumptions, or simply by not actively welcoming those who feel unworthy, we might unknowingly become obstacles. This story calls us to clear the way and create space for everyone to encounter the love of Christ.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for loving us unconditionally and welcoming us into Your presence. Help us to remove any barriers we may be putting up, in our own hearts or in the lives of others. Show us how to love more fully, welcoming everyone as You do. Amen.
Reflection Questions:
Have you ever felt held back by others from fully experiencing God’s love or grace? What helped you to overcome that?
In what ways might we, even unintentionally, place obstacles between others and God? How can we remove those barriers?
How can you welcome others in your life or faith community who may feel distant from God or unwelcome?
Reflect on the people in your life who might feel unworthy of God’s love. How can you show them that they are valued and loved as they are?
How can Bartimaeus’s faith and persistence inspire you to reach out to God boldly, no matter the barriers?
May this story remind you that you are loved unconditionally and that God is calling you closer, just as you are. Let it also be a reminder to offer that same openness to others. God’s love has no barriers; may we strive to embody that truth every day.

This challenged me to remember that other Christians I label as "bigoted" or "judgmental" are also people of faith that I can learn from and be in community with - using healthy boundaries and communication. I will reach out to some people I allowed to leave my life because of our differences in theology.
