Day 14: Make Time to Stop and Breathe in Your Favorite Scent

Scripture Highlight:“Taste and see how good YHWH is! Happiness comes to those who take refuge in YHWH.” —Psalm 34:8

Reflection: Our sense of smell has a unique ability to draw out deep feelings and memories, often taking us back to significant moments or places that feel like home. A favorite scent—whether it’s the aroma of freshly baked bread, a loved one’s perfume, or the smell of the outdoors after rain—can stir in us a feeling of warmth and comfort. Today, take a moment to breathe in a fragrance that brings you joy and gratitude, letting it remind you of God’s goodness in your life.

Psalm 34:8 invites us to “taste and see” that God is good, but we can also expand this invitation to all our senses. The beauty around us—colors, sounds, textures, tastes, and scents—reflects the loving creativity of God’s handiwork. As you enjoy a fragrance that you love, let it be an opportunity to dwell in God’s presence and remember that every good thing, including the ability to experience joy in life’s small pleasures, is a gift. As you pause, breathe deeply, and give thanks, may this moment be a reminder of God’s loving and intentional presence in your life.

Scripture Study (Optional Extended Reading): Psalm 34:1-10 In this extended reading, Psalm 34 encourages us to praise God through all circumstances, reflecting on God’s faithfulness and care. David, the psalmist, celebrates deliverance and invites others to “magnify” God with him, highlighting how personal experiences of God’s goodness can become a shared invitation to others.

The psalm also emphasizes how God hears the cries of those who seek refuge and takes action on behalf of those in need. “Taste and see that the Lord is good” is an invitation to experience God in a real, personal way, rather than just through knowledge or tradition. God’s presence in our lives can be as comforting as the scent of something cherished. Each time we pause to breathe in this goodness, we are reminded of the depth of God’s care and of how, no matter the trials, we are not alone.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What scent brings back a cherished memory for you? How does it make you feel, and what does it remind you of?

  2. How does taking time to enjoy simple pleasures help you connect with gratitude for God’s blessings?

  3. Reflect on a time when you experienced God’s goodness in a tangible way. How can you carry that sense of joy and gratitude into your day?

  4. What other simple, sensory experiences remind you of God’s presence in your life?

Prayer: Loving Creator, thank You for filling my life with beauty that touches all my senses. Help me to pause and take in the small joys You have placed around me, so that I may be reminded of Your goodness in every breath. May I experience Your love in the sights, sounds, and scents of creation and grow in gratitude for the ways You sustain me daily. Amen.

Call to Action: Take a moment today to enjoy a scent that makes you happy, and give thanks for it! And if you feel inspired, share a scent that you love in the comments.
