Recipes of Faith: Alan Strickler's Life Journey

A Little About Alan:

I am currently single, divorced 3 times. I have 4 kids, 2 daughters 2 sons. I also have 3 granddaughters. I have a relationship with my older son and daughter, the younger two I don't and that has been their decision. I am retired and I live by myself in New River Valley, VA, near Blue Ridge Mountains.

Alan's Trial:

I was sexually molested as a child by distant family member who was not right mentally. This led to a life of sexual confusion, addiction to porn, adult bookstores, anonymous hookups with mostly men. This continued from my early 20's to finally stopping about a year and a half ago. I have been hospitalized twice for depression and suicide attempts. The divorces, the sex issues & a fractured relationship with my late mom all led to up to that. I made it through this trial when I realized my urine was turning dark. I went to a urologist and wait months for my biopsy as it was not considered essential surgery. By the time I had my biopsy, I was stage 4 prostate cancer that was rare and inoperable. I was referred to Augusta Health Cancer and Blood Disorders, a part of Duke Cancer. The treatments started with pills and followed up by 6 rounds of intense chemo every 3 weeks. This ended in October but did not lower my PSA as was hoped. In December, my oncologist decided to become more aggressive with experimental pills of which there was no data following chemo. My PSA at diagnosis of cancer was 163 and it is now 0.07!

How Did Alan Get Through This Trial:

I came through these trials as a result of God, the Holy Spirit, my prayer warriors, my cancer team and my HTCC family. I read my Bible almost daily and I start off with one of those verses. I'm constantly praying & giving thanks. I am at a great place now in my life, which doesn't make sense I'm sure, when you have stage 4 cancer that cant be cured by usual methods, however I have the One & Only God, His son Jesus, The Holy Spirit & Bible!

How HTCC a party of this Journey:

I have so many people supporting me and praying for me. Many I will never meet. I am truly overcome with emotion when I think about all these people caring about little ole me.

Favorite Bible Verses:

Jeremiah 29 11- 14

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.”

2 Corinthians 12: 9

Perhaps you think we’re saying these things just to defend ourselves. No, we tell you this as Christ’s servants, and with God as our witness. Everything we do, dear friends, is to strengthen you.

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd;

I have all that I need.

He lets me rest in green meadows;

he leads me beside peaceful streams.

He renews my strength.

He guides me along right paths,

bringing honor to his name.

Even when I walk

through the darkest valley,

I will not be afraid,

for you are close beside me.

Your rod and your staff

protect and comfort me.

You prepare a feast for me

in the presence of my enemies.

You honor me by anointing my head with oil.

My cup overflows with blessings.

Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me

all the days of my life,

and I will live in the house of the Lord

forever.
