We continued our 6-week worship series, "Not A Fan" based on our small group study on Wednesday and Thursday nights - fan: an enthusiastic admirer.
In the Gospels, Jesus never seemed too interested in fans. Is that how you define your relationship with Him? An "enthusiastic admirer"? Close enough to Jesus to get the benefits but not so close to require sacrifice? He was looking for followers. Not just any follower though, but a...COMPLETELY. COMMITTED. FOLLOWER.
Worship Series: “Not a Fan”
Sunday Sermon Theme More than Rules
Scripture: John 8:1-11
Overview: Rules can be healthy for society. We have to have them to organize the lives of different experiences and expectations of people. But those rules tend to take on a legalistic and moralist code in churches. And to the world "rule" followers have become synonymous with hypocrites. As a faith community we must define Christianity, first and foremost, as the following of Jesus Christ, not following rules. We cannot expect to invite the world to a relationship with God if we make following rules and regulations the center of that relationship. If it isn’t about love, then it really isn’t about God.
Community Challenge: Have you ever experienced the freedom that is found in knowing and following Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? Or are you a mainly a rule following fan?
