The Message

Rev. Dr. Brice Thomas

Sermon Theme: HOly-Spirited Community
Scripture Text: Acts 2:36-47

The cross and resurrection of Jesus the Messiah was the early church’s central message, and was consistent throughout the book of Acts and NT. Jesus’ death paid for our sins, and yet he lives. Death could not hold him. Therefore we can have hope not only in this life, but also in the life to come. But the gospel message was not just about heaven. It was also a direct challenge to revise their values, follow God and address human needs on the earth. This community would share everything. They would sell their property and possessions and give it to those in need. They would worship together every day; meet in homes for communion. Share all of their meals together.

Is that even possible for a 21st Century Church community today when we are all taught to be independent and autonomous citizens? Why don’t we as Jesus followers live more like the first Christians and share everything in common? Luke describes in detail what the Spirit-filled church was like in Jerusalem. It was completely communal and had three distinct features: (1) They were devoted to one another; (2) They shared all things in common; and (3) There were no needy persons among them.

Luke’s account of the life of the early church describes what the Holy Spirit can do when people respond to the gospel with repentance. The Spirit so filled their lives that nothing, including possessions, got in the way of showing love to each other. They belonged to one Lord, and thus surrendered everything!

  1. Make a list of the people in your life who you encounter on a consistent basis.

  2. Why are they in your life? What have they taught you about God and about yourself?

  3. What are their unmet needs? For whom might God be calling you to meet those needs?

  4. By identifying this Spirit-filled community in your life, you can expect profound signs and wonders to follow when you deepen these connections.
