The Message

Rev. Dr. Brice Thomas

Sermon Theme: Comfort the Afflicted, Afflict the Comfortable
Scripture Text: Acts 5:12-18; 27-35; 38-39

In our sacred story and other passages throughout the NT, all Christians are called to be witnesses to Christ. Some will be martyred for it. The early believers knew the risks of aligning themselves with Jesus as Messiah as this new movement became a concern to the Jewish religious establishment. In our sacred story today, Peter and John are again brought before the religious court but this time are arrested and jailed.

As a modern day faith community we may not encounter the same persecution as our forefathers and mothers, but we may face ridicule or discrimination for taking a stand against what we see happening in our world today. Later in Acts, Luke describes that the work of serving those in need is just as important as prayer and preaching. Both are essential in the formation of God’s people and for the witness of God’s people in the world.

We are all called to be a witness to the world; the kind that shines truth into dark places. And this truth is, above all else, the empowering and redemptive work of the Spirit for all humankind. When you do that, you just might experience persecution for it; not necessarily the kind that might end your life, but it is the only truth worth risking your life for. What is one way you can personally identify with the suffering Christ?
