The Message

Rev. Dr. Brice Thomas & Aaron Bostwick

Sermon Theme: Living OUt Loud
Scripture Text: Acts  6:8-15; 7:1; 7:51-59
Community:

Most of us are familiar with the stoning of Stephen. Although he was not the first person in the early Jesus movement to die, he was the first to be martyred for the sake of Jesus. As one of the seven chosen to oversee the distribution of food to the new community, Stephen is a man full of faith, wisdom and the Holy Spirit. God performs miracles through him, and a great number of Jewish priests come to faith in Jesus due to Stephen’s witness. But not everyone is happy with his passion for Christ, and some like Saul wouldn’t stand for it.

Connection:

Stephen lived his faith “out loud” meaning he was not afraid of living his faith publicly so that others could see it, even if it meant his death. Later Paul, after being converted from Saul, writes in Galatians 2:20; “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” This is a familiar verse to many of us. But what does it really mean to live our lives "out loud" for Christ?

Change:

In this modern world of instagram scrolling, Facebook ranting, and tik toking it is clear that we are all desperately searching for the same thing, our identity. How do we define our identity? How do we engage in real discipleship together when all we have to use is the very technology that keeps us from making connections with each other and God? What keeps us from sharing the Gospel and living out loud? Sometimes living with a purpose means dying for a cause.
